Asbestos Related Illness
|
| |
| Asbestosis and Mesothelioma are illnesses caused by the inhalation of asbestos particles.
Asbestosis is a scarring of the lung from the asbestos fibres that are inhaled and can cause heart failure, reduced lung function and restricting breathing capacity.
Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer, where cells are found in the sac lining of the chest and lungs (known as pleural mesothelioma) or abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). Mesothelioma can affect people who have experienced low or intermittent levels of asbestos exposure.
Both diseases are slowly progressive, symptoms of can take up to 30 years after the actual exposure to asbestos to manifest.
Both diseases have no known cures and are found most commonly among workers who came into contact with asbestos such as:
- Roofers
- Electricians
- Plumbers
- Bricklayers
- Ironworkers
- Woodworkers
- Chemists
- Demolition contractors
- Gas fitters
- Mechanics
- Dockers
- Sheet metal workers
- Painters
- Plasterers
- Lathers
- Labourers
- Machinist
- Engineers
Obviously these are just a few examples of work environments that have been known to cause asbestos related illnesses, there are many more.
