What should I do if I have had an accident?
|
| |
If you have an accident it is wise to record as much evidence as possible following the incident, which could later support a claim for compensation. Even if initially you do not intend to make a claim for accident compensation, you may well change your mind in the future and it is always better to be prepared.
- If the injury was as a result of a car accident or criminal act, always inform the police and remember to take details of the officers involved and any incident number.
- If the injury was a result of an accident in the workplace, make sure your employer is informed and the accident is recorded in an accident book . By law your employer must report any accidents that take place at work to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive).
- Get your GP or local hospital to look at your injuries, even minor injuries. Should you claim for compensation, your doctor can then provide medical evidence in court.
- Take the contact details of any witnesses to your accident, or take insurance details of other parties involved in a car accident.
- Record as much information as you can after the accident; try to write an exact account or statement of the incident.
- If possible take photographs of the scene of the accident. If you fall down a hole in the road, photograph the hole that caused the fall. Use a ruler to show the height/depth of the area.
- Keep a record of any expenses resulting from the accident, including prescription costs or travel expenses. Always keep receipts as evidence.
